What is Blue-Violet light?
You are aware that Sunlight is made up of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet light. When combined, it becomes the white light we see. Each of these has a different energy and wavelength. Red, orange, yellow, green rays that have relatively long wavelengths contain less energy and less harmful and blue, indigo and violet light rays with short wavelengths have more energy are more harmful. With Blue-Violet light rays, we have advantages as well as disadvantages. Overexposure to blue-violet light rays will have some adverse effects on eye health. The light that looks white and bright can have a large amount of blue-violet light, like LCD and LED computer screens, Smartphone screens etc. In the present working conditions, all the office rooms are lit with powerful CFL, LED and CFL bulbs which can expose the eye to a higher amount of blue-violet light affecting eyes specifically the retina. It is also a risk factor for the onset of age-related macular degeneration, a deterioration of the part of the retina responsible for sharp, central vision.
What are the sources of Blue-Violet light?
The largest source of blue light is sunlight. Apart from sunlight, there are other sources
- Fluorescent light
- CFL bulbs, LED, LED lights
- Flat screen LCD & LED televisions
- LED, LED Computer monitors, smartphones, and tablet screens
The blue-violet light exposure you receive from screens is small compared to the amount of exposure from the sun. And yet, there is concern over the long-term effects of screen exposure because of the close proximity of the screens and the length of time spent looking at them. According to a recent study, children’s eyes absorb more blue light than adults from digital device screens. Hence it is advisable for children not to spend too much time on computers.
